Much More Than Addition and Subtraction
A Christmas present for a 7yr old and 11yr old. I wanted to teach my children basic Math concepts. This is an amazing tool. I have never used one and am learning to use it as well. Much more difficult than I thought it would be. It comes with basic instructions. We have been using YouTube to get more out of it. Hopefully my children will expand upon their ability to think and better incorporate different Math concepts.

perfect for working on addition and subtraction with children
This is perfect for my daughter. She is in kindergarten and is learning addition and subtraction and this has been a huge help. She is such a visual learner so this was great for her.

Easy to use and best tool for Math
I love love Abacus, there is a reason it was the first tool used to teach Math. I really really wish I had gotten this instead of wasting money on other products that I have never touched again. I should have purchased this when my kids were 2.5-3 years old!!! I am having a hard time teaching addition and subtraction and other concepts to my 4.5 years old boys, and this is perfect because it teaches all these concepts, encourages using logic, and my boys' being visual, they respond better to this. Highly recommend.

Love to use this to support my students in the ...
Love to use this to support my students in the resource classroom. My students are diverse learners and need the concrete support. I labeled one side of the abacus counting up by 10s and it really helps my students to see how many are there.

Perfect Dimensions and Weight for Storage and Usability
Visualizing math at an early age is important for a child's development in learning numbers. It gives context to what they're actually doing when they add/subtract/multiply/divide. An abacus gives them tactile feedback rather than me drawing circles on a piece of paper for them to count, so they can process the actual equation themselves. I use this with my 4 year old to add up/multiply our Scrabble scores. It helps him visualize the answers rather than just memorizing them. The quality is great and well worth the money. Each row is given a nice even number of 10 beads and rows are colored in good contrast. It's fairly lightweight but the bottom is heavy enough that it stays stable on the table. The size is perfect - not too big for storage, not too small for practical use. Overall, great product. I definitely recommend it.

A math tool that works and will last.
I keep this at my house to help with math homework for my Grand-kids. They love it. At first it was a little difficult for them to grasp the concept of ones, tens hundreds etc. but they got it and it works perfect. This math tool is made well, has nice colors and has made homework a lot easier. Melissa & Doug products are a bit more expensive but in the end generally last a long time.

Beautiful and well made...
I purchased this for my six year old and she looked at it like I gave her a worm. But after I showed her how to use it, whenever she gets math homework she brings it with her - I'm happy she is actually using it. It looks exactly as shown, but what you can't see is that it is well made and substantial.

Good. Would buy again
I bought this for my son to help him in math. He is a visual learner and using cans of food just wasn't cutting it anymore since he's getting to the bigger numbers. He absolutely loves it and his grades have drastically improved! The product arrived in 2 days without damage to the abacus or the package. I would buy again.

Get this abacus!
My 7 year old daughter still uses her fingers for simple addition even though she is in a gifted math program and has moved on to and understands more complex math. Of course she doesn't have enough fingers! So I ordered this abacus, not sure if she would even understand how to use it. Well she uses it daily and it is a great visual to really see what each number looks like and why we would add or subtract to problem solve. She even has learned some simple multiplication (3x3, 2x4, and 2x11 were the problems she had to solve.) "Times" (mulitiplication) really gave her anxiety, but with this abacus, she really could see "3 three times," "2 four times," and "2 eleven times," as well as allowing her to easily see how multiplication was a communitive property. No more multiplication anxiety! I love this abacus. We have only used it in this way so far, but I am really looking forward to reading the directions and checking out some YouTube videos as another reviewer suggested. I chose this abacus based on all of the positive reviews and am happy with it! It is strong and sturdy and serves it's purpose. I have a 2 year old that loves moving the beads back and forth and it is not flimsy.

Beautifully made
This is a great novelty item and toy. My husband is a science and math geek so he definitely wanted our little one to have an abacus. At 1 years old, she is not doing any Math problems. However, she does like to move the beads back and forth, which is good practice for dexterity. Melissa and Doug make great toys (check out their puzzles and food items) and to be honest I'm surprised this didn't cost more. The base is sturdy - she's used it now for several months and nothing has come undone. She can easily grab it and carry it around as well. The second pic can give you a sense of the size as well.
